Our goal is to offer each child an active and ongoing process of self-discovery that unfolds in the present moment, while also preparing them for the future.

Children have an innate love for learning! They are inherently curious about their environment and their place within it. That's why our program philosophy is centered on the desire to integrate a diverse range of teaching methodologies, drawing inspiration from Maria Montessori, Reggio Emilia, and the principles outlined in "How Does Learning Happen?"—Ontario's Pedagogy for the Early Years.

Montessori

Orca Kids specialises in providing Maria Montessori principles and methodology in teaching and addressing all aspects of growth: cognitive, physical, social, emotional and language. In Montessori children develop the habits and skills of lifelong learning.

Principles of a Montessori Education:

Respect for the Child - A child as individual, and has different ways of learning that should be supported by the teacher and classroom environment.

The Absorment Mind - The early years of a child's life as an important developmental time, where children discover and understand themselves and the world around them.

The Child as Active in Learning - In Montessori classroom, the teacher's role is to observe and guide the child based on their interests and developmental needs. The teacher embraces the learning style of the child.

Orca Kids believes that in order to respect the "hundred languages" of our children, children must be allowed to express themselves in as many ways as possible. That is why we feel that an art-based education is ideal on the Reggio Emilia Integrated Approach.

Reggio Emilia, a region in Italy where this education philosophy was created, is founded on four principles:

A child must have control over the direction of his\her learning.

Children learn through experience.

Children must build relationships with other children and with the object that surround them

Children must be able to express themselves in many different ways

How Does Learning Happen? Ontario's Pedagogy for the Early Years

Orca Kids strives to promote a positive, safe, loving, nurturing and home-like atmosphere where the health, safety, nutrition and well-being of our children is on of the utmost importance . We encourage mutual respect, patience and creativity in an inclusive environment while viewing children as competent, capable, curious and rich potential. Using How Does Learning Happen? Ontario's Pedagogy for the Early Years (2014) to guide our programing and pedagogy.

We organize and incorporate our programs around four foundational conditions that are important for children to grow and flourish: Belonging, Well-Being, Engagement and Expression. These foundations, or ways of being, are vision for all children's future potential and a view of what they should experience each and every day. These four foundations apply regardless of age, ability, culture, language, geoagraphy, or setting and help your child be prepared for entry into the school system.

Art Connection

Our Visual and Fine Arts curriculum is well planned, yet invites children to explore themselves through art, and have freedom in their expression. Our focus is primarily to explore colours, textures and various materials. The children are exposed to art history, learning about famous artists, and have firsthand experience with differen artistic styles. Children use art as a language, and our experinced Art teachers come in to work with children on their art development. They explore three-dimensional art, natural art, light exploration and many other exciting techniques where art skills of the children are highly developed.

Extra-curricular activities

We also believe that extra-curricular activities are one of the many ways that we set our childcare centre apart from the rest. Early learning and exposure to various arts such as classical music, music and movement, Drama, the Art, French, math, science, yoga and much more are provided in our weekly curriculum for the children in our care.
